The Water Safety Challenge App is the latest education resource to be launched by Royal Life Saving targeting children in lower primary school years; Foundation, 1 and 2.
Water Safety education is essential to prevent drowning incidents. Our education initiatives aim to increase awareness of the dangers and hazards that water poses, understand safety actions and develop positive behaviours for safely living and recreating in and around water.
The Water Safety Challenge App is an interactive ‘game show’ style presentation that teaches children about the dangers in and around water at home and other environments, safe places to swim, how to keep safe, how to get help in an emergency and calling Triple Zero (000).
We encourage all schools to take the Water Safety Challenge in their classrooms using iPads and an interactive whiteboard. Students connect to a unique ‘quiz’ room code on an iPad that is used as a ‘buzzer’ while the main presentation is displayed on the interactive whiteboard.
There are six rounds to play:
- Water Safety at Home
- Dangers around Water
- Safe Places to Swim
- Staying Safe in the Water
- Getting Help
- Calling Triple Zero (000)
In each round, children watch the interactive whiteboard and listen to each question, and then enter their response on their iPads.
The Water Safety Challenge is hosted by a facilitator which can be a classroom teacher or a Royal Life Saving presenter.
A handy facilitator’s guide provides important information on how to use the App in primary schools. It includes detailed instructions to aid facilitators in successful delivery as well as additional discussion questions to complement the learning within each topic.
The Water Safety Challenge has clear student learning outcomes that are linked to the Australian Health and Physical Curriculum and the National Swimming and Water Safety Framework.
It’s easy to for schools to take the Water Safety Challenge in their classrooms by downloading both the Water Safety Challenge and Buzzer Apps for free!
