Team Announcements: Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships
Royal Life Saving Society – Australia has selected athletes from across Australia to compete at the 2023 Royal Life Saving Society Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships which are being held in September in Ontario, Canada.
Australia sends two teams to the Championships, a national team and a development team, to compete in events including manikin carry, line throw and super lifesaver. Each event is designed to test the athlete’s speed and technical excellence.
The team announcements follow the outstanding performance of competitors at the Royal Life Saving Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships in Melbourne in January.
Pool lifesaving is one of the three core disciplines that make up the sport of lifesaving internationally. In addition to ocean and beach disciplines, more commonly known as surf lifesaving, pool lifesaving tests swimming, rescue skills and initiative in a still-water environment.
Royal Life Saving Society – Australia Chief Executive Officer, Justin Scarr said the teams would be competing against some of the best pool lifesavers in the world in Canada.
“I congratulate all the athletes on their selection in what was a very tough process given the calibre of competition we saw in January at the Australian Lifesaving Championships,” Mr Scarr said.
“The athletes use their training not only in competition, but also to be teachers, swim teachers, swim club members, and pool lifeguards, supporting the next generation of Australians to stay safe around water.
“The skills and the precision that you see during the competition are used every day in pools, at rivers, lakes, and beaches to save lives. Every moment counts in a real-life rescue situation.”
