Flooding and drowning

What you need to know:

  • Flooding is the most common natural disaster in Australia.
  • Flooding is dangerous because it can increase your risk of drowning
  • During a flood, water conditions can change quickly including flash flooding and strong currents
  • Water visibility can change and hide hazards like submerged objectives (trees, powerlines) and animals

How to stay safe

  • Never drive through flood waters
  • Never swim in flooded waters
  • Never ride on boogie/surf boards in flood water
  • Wherever possible, wear a life jacket when in, on or around flood waters
  • If conducting a rescue, avoid entering water yourself
  • When swimming in natural waterways after floods be aware that conditions may have changed since you last swam there
  • After floods always check the water before entry and enter slowly feet first
  • If river level rises go to safety as quickly as possible
