Flooding and drowning
What you need to know:
- Flooding is the most common natural disaster in Australia.
- Flooding is dangerous because it can increase your risk of drowning
- During a flood, water conditions can change quickly including flash flooding and strong currents
- Water visibility can change and hide hazards like submerged objectives (trees, powerlines) and animals
How to stay safe
- Never drive through flood waters
- Never swim in flooded waters
- Never ride on boogie/surf boards in flood water
- Wherever possible, wear a life jacket when in, on or around flood waters
- If conducting a rescue, avoid entering water yourself
- When swimming in natural waterways after floods be aware that conditions may have changed since you last swam there
- After floods always check the water before entry and enter slowly feet first
- If river level rises go to safety as quickly as possible
