ELIGIBILITY TO COMPETE

A summary of eligibility criteria for competitors is provided below. Refer to the RLSSA Competition Handbook (Section 1.8) for full eligibility criteria.

To compete in the Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships, all competitors must:

  • Meet age division criteria (outlined below);
  • Hold a current lifesaving award;
    • Under 16: Current RLSSA Bronze Star OR Surf Rescue Certificate OR designated SLSA award applicable to the competitor's age.
    • All Other Age Divisions: Current RLSSA Bronze Medallion OR SLSA Bronze Medallion
  • Be endorsed to compete by the organisation they are representing.

To be eligible for Australian Pool Lifesaving Championship awards (and point score), competitors must:

  • Be a citizen or resident of an Australian State or Territory;
  • Be a current, financial member in good standing with a Royal Life Saving State or Territory Member Organisation (for at least 90 days prior to the entries-close date);
  • Hold a Royal Life Saving Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion or equivalent award applicable to the competitor’s age, including SLSA Surf Rescue Certificate or Surf Bronze.
  • Meet the criteria of the age division that they are entering (outlined below).

N.B: To be considered for individual over-all awards, athletes much compete in ALL individual events.

Additional criteria applies for team Championships. Refer to the RLSSA Competition Handbook (Section 1.8) for further information.

Non-Royal Life Saving members:

Competitors that meet age and lifesaving award criteria but are not Royal Life Saving members may compete as invitational competitors subject to:

  • Confirmation that the competitor is a current, financial member of the organisation they are representing, that the competitor holds the relevant lifesaving award, and has endorsement to participate.
  • Acceptance of the participant disclaimer (provided at registration).

Invitational competitors must provide this information at registration, which will be verified by RLSSA. Invitation competitors are not eligible for point score or Championship awards.

Criteria for age divisions:

A competitor’s age is taken as at the 1st of January in the competition year. This means the age the competitor is on January 1st is the age they use to enter the competition. A summary of eligibility criteria for each age division is provided below. Refer to the RLSSA Competition Handbook (Section 1.9) for further details:

  • Under 14 (Minimum age 11 years, maximum age 13 years)
  • Under 16 (Minimum age 12 years, maximum age 15 years, minimum award is Bronze Star or equivalent)
  • Under 19 (Minimum age 12 years, maximum age 18 years, minimum award is Bronze Medallion or equivalent)
  • Open (Minimum age 12 years, no maximum age, minimum award is Bronze Medallion or equivalent)

Masters (minimum age 30 years, no maximum age, minimum award is Bronze Medallion or equivalent). Masters age groups include 30-44 years, 45-59 years, 60+ years.

DRAFT SYSTEM

Interstate teams seeking athletes to fill team positions (and vice versa) should refer to the RLSSA Competition Handbook (Appendix E) for details of the draft process and application forms.

Teams and athletes wishing to nominate for the draft system should submit a draft application form to the Championship Organiser by Sunday 8 December 2024.
