At the public swimming pool
A well-fitted Lycra swimsuit should be worn when swimming at a public pool. These can be purchased at most sporting stores. Many modest options are now available. Street clothing such as leggings, underwear, t-shirts and jeans should not be worn as they can become heavy when wet and increase the risk of drowning.
You can choose to wear a well-fitted pair of goggles (swimming glasses) and a swimming cap. Goggles are not compulsory, but they can protect your eyes.
Swimming caps may be compulsory at your pool. Contact your pool to find out their policy before going. Swimming caps are not the same as shower caps.
At the beach/river
Beach and river environments are public places and people can where whatever they like in the water. However, heavy clothing such as long pants, jeans, jumpers/sweaters are not recommended in the water as they can become heavy when wet and make it more difficult to swim, which increases the risk of drowning.
Swimming shorts and t-shirts as well as more modest options are available. Swimming t-shirts – called rash vests – are made of swimming material can be purchased from many shops with long and short sleeves.
