AP1 - Supervision of Swimming and Water Safety

Purpose

To ensure there is a defined responsibility for the supervision of swimming and water safety activities at an aquatic facility.

Description

The owner or operator of an Aquatic Facility should nominate an employee who is responsible for the supervision of swimming and water safety programs.

The employee should oversee the development, implementation, monitoring and continual improvement of the Swimming and Water Safety program, its operating procedures and the training and professional development activities of staff relevant to the Swimming and Water Safety program.

The employee should be senior enough to represent and engage with the stakeholders (i.e. owners, operators, lifeguards, pool plant operators, lessors) at the aquatic facility.

The employee should engage where reasonably available representatives of users of the Aquatic Facility including Lifeguards, Swim Coaches, Learn to Swim Instructors and Pool Plant Operators.

The employee should meet with all Swimming and Water Safety staff at least 4 times a year however at a minimum this must be at least once every 12 months with minutes and action items of the meeting.

Training and Qualifications

Initial Training

The employee supervising swimming and water safety programs at an Aquatic Facility should hold the following current competencies (or be able to demonstrate equivalent currency):

  • SISCAQU006 Supervise clients in aquatic locations
  • HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid
  • SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues

If the employee supervising swimming and water safety programs is located at an aquatic facility that only facilitates swimming and water safety programs, they (or someone else in the facility should also hold competencies as described in Pool Lifeguards, Emergency Planning, Safety Equipment and/or Incident Management.

Currency Training and Professional Development

The employee supervising swimming and water safety programs should participate in a skills currency session at intervals no longer than 12 months apart.
