The Teacher of Lifesaving is an online professional development course that covers the fundamentals of providing engaging, effective and safe teaching in a lifesaving context.
It is designed to upskill current swimming and water safety teachers or physical education teachers by providing the context, technique and teaching strategies for a range of lifesaving skills, including personal survival, rescue and resuscitation.
The course acknowledges that teachers have varying degrees of prior knowledge and skills and seeks to build on this expertise. It asks teachers to reflect on the context and theory that underpins skills, address gaps to improve learner outcomes and overall program quality, and reflect on their personal teaching practices.
A range of learning activities are used to provide an interactive and educational experience, including video, hypotheticals, knowledge prompts, true/false, drag and drop, click and reveal tiles, and scenarios.
On successful completion, participants will receive the Teacher of Lifesaving Award and the course has been recognised as contributing to 2 hours of professional development with the Royal Life Saving and AUSTSWIM swim teacher license schemes.
